[FROM THE PREFACE]
The recipes and stories contained in this small collection are by no means presented as a history of this land - but rather as a mere recolLection of some of the aspects of settlement which gave rise to the mountain lore, profoundly appreciated, but little understood by so many of us today.
Whether the stories are all true is doubtful, but I have attempted to verify the accounts with original newspaper reports, territorial docu- ments, court records, interviews, etc. Recapturing the spirit of an early territorial law officer, "Well there's an element of truth" in all that's been told.
Many of the incidents have been recounted in their original format so as to retain that certain humor, style, vigor and severity relegated to those historical years of 1860 to the early 1900's.
No hierarchy of importance gave rise to any of the stories or pho- tos included. It was my intent to tell just enough of the people, the places and the times to stimulate those who cross the trails laid out in these pages to seek out other paths which will unveil the real mystic and beauty of this land - THE WHITE MOUNTAINS.
